First Aid Guide

Quick step-by-step instructions for common emergencies. Always call for professional help.

Severe bleeding

  1. Apply firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth.
  2. Raise the injured part above the heart if possible.
  3. Do not remove an embedded object — pad around it.
  4. Call emergency services if bleeding will not stop within 10 minutes.

Burns

  1. Cool the burn under cool (not cold) running water for 20 minutes.
  2. Remove jewellery and loose clothing before swelling.
  3. Cover loosely with cling film or a clean non-fluffy cloth.
  4. Never apply ice, butter, oil or toothpaste.

Choking adult

  1. Encourage strong coughs.
  2. If they cannot breathe, give 5 sharp back blows between the shoulder blades.
  3. Follow with 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich).
  4. Alternate until the object clears or help arrives.

CPR basics (adult)

  1. Call emergency services and ask for an AED.
  2. Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest, ~100–120 per minute, 5–6 cm deep.
  3. Give 30 compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths if trained.
  4. Keep going until help arrives or the person responds.

Suspected fracture

  1. Do not move the limb unnecessarily.
  2. Support it in the position found using padding.
  3. Apply ice wrapped in cloth to reduce swelling.
  4. Get medical care promptly.

Snake bite

  1. Keep the person calm and still.
  2. Immobilise the bitten limb at or below heart level.
  3. Remove tight clothing or jewellery.
  4. Get to a hospital immediately — do NOT cut, suck or apply a tourniquet.
