Quick step-by-step instructions for common emergencies. Always call for professional help.
Severe bleeding
- Apply firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth.
- Raise the injured part above the heart if possible.
- Do not remove an embedded object — pad around it.
- Call emergency services if bleeding will not stop within 10 minutes.
Burns
- Cool the burn under cool (not cold) running water for 20 minutes.
- Remove jewellery and loose clothing before swelling.
- Cover loosely with cling film or a clean non-fluffy cloth.
- Never apply ice, butter, oil or toothpaste.
Choking adult
- Encourage strong coughs.
- If they cannot breathe, give 5 sharp back blows between the shoulder blades.
- Follow with 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich).
- Alternate until the object clears or help arrives.
CPR basics (adult)
- Call emergency services and ask for an AED.
- Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest, ~100–120 per minute, 5–6 cm deep.
- Give 30 compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths if trained.
- Keep going until help arrives or the person responds.
Suspected fracture
- Do not move the limb unnecessarily.
- Support it in the position found using padding.
- Apply ice wrapped in cloth to reduce swelling.
- Get medical care promptly.
Snake bite
- Keep the person calm and still.
- Immobilise the bitten limb at or below heart level.
- Remove tight clothing or jewellery.
- Get to a hospital immediately — do NOT cut, suck or apply a tourniquet.
